I was helping a friend with a dead XP Home SP2 machine today. The machine would get to the end of the initial XP logo screen, but die with a blue-screen complaining about a corrupted SOFTWARE registry ...

I've successfully gone back to a Restore Point in Windows XP x64 on bootcamp. Haven't tried with 7, but I can't see any reason why it wouldn't. Perhaps the problem is with your Windows install?
