Have you ever seen one of these operating on a railway line and wondered what it’s doing? It’s called a Tamper, and its job is to pack or ‘tamp’ the ballast (small stones) under the track. The Tamper measures the track, lifts it and packs the ballast underneath to hold it in place. It’s a very important machine which helps create a smoother ride for passengers and freight.
