Great Freedom opens with a montage of cottaging encounters between men in a public toilet in 60s Germany. The shots are grainy, filmed with a Super-8 camera, and it is only after they're over that the viewer realises its surveillance footage shot to get a conviction. The film takes place in post-war Germany, following Hans, who is imprisoned again and again under Paragraph 175, a law criminalizing homosexuality.
