Deanna Durbin rose to fame circa 1936 at Universal Studios, aged just 14. Her debut in “Three Smart Girls” saved the studio from bankruptcy. Born in Winnipeg, she moved to Los Angeles as a child. By 1938, she was Hollywood’s top box-office draw. She met world leaders, including Winston Churchill, who adored her films. Her voice, pure and operatic, defined the era. In 1949, she left fame behind. She married Charles David and settled in France. She never returned to Hollywood. Her legend endures.
