Hear that?! It's a sweet chorus of spring peepers! These tiny amphibians, no more than 1'' long, begin singing in early spring to attract future mates. The males typically start their "peeping" sounds in March up until June. The warmer the weather gets, the more mates they can attract so they can reproduce. Fun fact: female peepers lay their eggs singly (aka one at a time), attaching them to submerged vegetation. A female peeper can lay up to 1,500 eggs! So, next time you are out exploring, keep

What is that you hear? That’s right, it is spring and the frogs are out and talking! Here in St. Louis we have several species of frogs that come out and breed early in spring. Males will make their way to the water’s edge and call for females. Each species has its own unique call. In honor of #SaveTheFrogDay tomorrow, here are some species you can hear in and around the St. Louis area this time of year. The spring peeper, a true indicator that spring has arrived. Just like their name implies, s

Spring peepers are coming out of hibernation making their distinct chirping sounds. 🐸 Have you heard them? DYK, due to the spring peepers' permeable skin, they are highly sensitive to pollution. Because of this sensitivity, spring peepers are good indicators of the health of their surrounding environment. Peepers = healthy water and forest! | New Jersey Forest Service

Spring peepers are tiny frogs whose calls typically herald the beginning of spring. It's hard to believe that it can be difficult to spot one since they turn our wetlands into a spring symphony—this little guy was spotted by chance here at Teatown. | Teatown Lake Reservation

The Spring Peepers are still going strong. A sound of spring, the chorus of peepers is the sound of the male frogs calling to the females to mate. Only male peepers can sing. They are nocturnal insectivores that are only about one to one and a half inches long. What a sound from a tiny frog! Their calls have registered up to 90 decibels about the level of a lawn mower! These frogs are common but the loss of wetlands is impacting their environment. #springpeepers #peepers #watershed #wetlands #gr

Spring peepers are small chorus frogs (Pseudacris crucifer) known for their distinctive high-pitched “peep” calls, which are one of the first signs of spring in many parts of eastern North America, including Michigan. What They Are: • Size: Tiny—only about 1 inch long. • Color: Typically tan or brown with a dark “X” marking on their backs. • Habitat: Found in wooded areas and near wetlands, especially in temporary pools and marshes during breeding season. • Sound: Their calls sound like high-pit

When is the first day of spring? What to know about next season and how long it lasts

Do you recognize this sound? Considered by many as the announcement of spring, this distinct, loud, high-pitched “peep” is the call of a spring peeper. More often heard than seen, these very small, pale-brown frogs can be recognized by the X-shaped mark on their backs. #WildlifeWednesday | NYS Department of Environmental Conservation

We've been enjoying the melodious chorus of spring peepers! In spring, they’re one of the first species to start calling, with males emitting a high-pitched "peep" at one-second intervals. Breeding season begins in February and lasts until June. Males call from the water’s edge, where females can lay up to 900 eggs, which are fertilized as they’re laid. The eggs are attached to dead leaves or sticks and hatch within 3 to 14 days, depending on water temperature. The tadpoles undergo metamorphosis

Ever hear this sound in early spring and think "what could that bird be?" Surprise, it's not a bird, it's a spring peeper! Spring peepers are a chorus frog that typically lives around woodlands and wetlands, like this one at Stroud Preserve. Thanks to Jarrod Shull for sharing this video. | Natural Lands

For many people, spring starts with the first warm day. For us, it starts with spring peepers. These tiny frogs have a distinctive trill that begins popping up pond by pond as the weather warms. Some people call it “the big night” when it happens, but really it unfolds habitat by habitat as frogs wake up for the season - until suddenly the whole area is ringing with that unmistakable spring soundtrack. As our Chief Medical and Program Director Dr. Greg Mertz said, keep your ears open! And let us
