You can divide perennials that don’t have a woody stem. Hostas are a great way to start! Dig the soil in around the edges of the plant to loosen the roots from the soil, then you can use your hands often on a hosta to grab a 4 to 6 inch chunk of the roots. Now you have a free plant! You can, of course take larger chunks if you want to, and you can also take a shovel and drive it down a section of the plant to divide the roots from the edge.
