By 1938, she was Hollywood’s top box-office draw. She met world leaders, including Winston Churchill, who adored her films. Her voice, pure and operatic, defined the era. In 1949, she left fame behind. She married Charles David and settled in France. She never returned to Hollywood. Her legend endures.
