I think the key to success with an AAC session is the same as any speech session… 1. Balance demands. With AAC there might be times I’m modeling more and times when I’m waiting more to see what the child is going to do. I often see AAC users shut down when demands are consistently high. 2. It’s AAC awareness month this month, so I want to shed light on to an approach we have started in my Keystage 3 classroom to support AAC use to go beyond requesting. In brick therapy, it is just as much about listening skills as it is requesting skills, a new and tricky concept for my year 7s, who are previous PECs users and are a bit stuck in their “snack requests only” stage.
