The long trill of American Toads (Anaxyrus americanus) is a common sound on March nights. This native toad can be found across the eastern US in woodlands, grassy fields, and roadsides. During late winter and spring, they mate in shallow, fish-free pools of water. The females then lay thousands of eggs in a pair of long, spiraling threads. This is a Fowler's toad, known for its call like an nasal, buzzy trill that sounds like a baby crying. It's one of the sounds (and sights - if you're lucky) of spring!
